July 20th, 2009 Posted by Missie at 1:37 pm

Twitter is literally taking over the cyber space world, wether it be in the social media realm to news, current affair style shows to even those tweeting next to you on the bus. But as twitter becomes increasingly popular, it’s moving into businesses and corporations taking over employees, potential and exisiting customers and possible business partners. But instead of banning employees from accessing their Facebook accounts and tracking their tweets and profiles, twitter is a place for those associated with your business to share their knowledge, collaborate online and strengthen and build working relationships that will benefit your business and potential customers.

how twitter can help at work

So what are some ways twitter can help at work? Although it seems easy to jump on the ‘unproductive staff’ bandwagon, take a look at what twitter can do for your business, staff or even if you’re trying to convince your boss it’s OK to tweet.

Share, Share, Share

Sharing ideas, thoughts and information is what made twitter into it’s powerful medium it is today. Opening up twitter to staff and business customers is opening another door for people to share their their thoughts and opinions about a project, business objective or even start that next marketing strategy.

Build your enterprise (or empire!)

Building your brand can be like moving a mountain. But setting up your business on twitter can do wonders for achieving those business goals and objectives. It shows your understanding for customer service, encourages employees to twitter and respond to customers and increases the company’s reputation as a friendly place to work, communicate and connect with. It’s even noted by twitteres that top CEO’s like the CEO of Zappos, twitters frequently from his own account. Although this isn’t always the case with large scale, world wide corporations, showing a strong force of twitter buy your company can really do wonders for your company or brands image.

Respect those who use it

If you or your company has opened up twitter as a collaborative business or social tool in the workplace, showing respect to those who use it imperative. Sharing ideas that are open for the world to see takes some work, so common manners and respecting the companies policy is also essential. On the flip side, retweeting (RT @username…) tweets that add value to the company or ideas being shared, when done frequently, adds great effect and value.

Engage your customers

Twitter opens up the door to engage customers, it’s a 24/7, 365 day feedback channel that allows customers and those associated with a company or business to connect with their customer or even competitors.

Utalising Twitter’s excellent search feature lets you learn what people are saying about any term — including you, your competitors or your industry. (Oddly, this search feature is different from the relatively useless one at the top of your own Twitter home page.) You can then respond to individuals with the @username trick.

No matter how you choose to use twitter in your business or as staff member in a corporation, twitter is a tool that can be used to facilitate communication, collaboration, information sharing and as channel for customers or the world to provide feedback on your business. It’s a underrated tool, so step from the comfort zone within the walls and open your door to a new world of fresh thinking people.
