Twitter Hashtags
May 26th, 2009 Posted by Missie at 7:46 pm
As you become more popular on twitter and watch your list of friends and followers grow, it becomes increasingly hard to see messages directed at you in real time. Twitter Hashtags allow you to easily manage your busy twitter feed. So just what are Hashtags and how can you use them to your advantage?
Hashtags are a way to group twitter messages together according to subject matter, similar to the concept of Twitter groups or tagging. You follow @hashtags and then use the pound (#) symbol to tag the tweet, for example: #tweeterland.
An important factor to remember is that Hashtags is an opt-in service. You must follow @hashtags for the service to index your tweets. There are dedicated websites to Hashtags including a Hashtag index that lists all the Hashtags available.
To see all tweets for a Hashtag simply add the Hashtag name at the end of this URL: http://hashtags.org/tag/ (i.e. http://hashtags.org/tag/Yankees)
To help you get started on hastags, we’ve put together a cheatsheet;
- follow #tag: subscribe to all updates tagged with #tag
- follow username#tag : subscribe to all updates tagged with #tag from a specific user
- leave #tag : unsubscribe to a tag; you will still get updates with this tag from your friends
- leave username#tag: unsubscribe to a specific from a specific user
- remove #tag completely remove all incoming posts tagged with #tag, even from your friends
- #tag message: creates a status in the #tag channel
- #tag ! message: creates a status that is only visible to people subscribed to channel tag #tag
Visit the Hashtag official website if your nutty about Hashtags and want more information.

Hi
I’m probably doing something wrong. But if I type follow #whatever into the update box, I get an error message the name couldn’t be found. What do I wrong?

Hi Anne,
You’ll need to follow @hashtags for your tweets to be recognised. This will allow for your hashtag to be picked up and recognised as you intended.
If you have anymore troubles, let us know, or try http://hashtags.org.
Hope this helps,
Tweeterland
