What is Twitter?
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as ‘tweets’. Twitter asks the question ‘what are you doing?’ and allows users to reply with text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.
Tweets are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers).
Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

How is twitter useful?
Twitter has many uses for both personal and business use. It’s a great way to keep in touch with your friends and quickly broadcast information about where you are and what you’re up to. For example, “I’m downtown and aching for some sushi. Anyone like to join me?”
For business, Twitter can be used to broadcast your company’s latest news and blog posts, interact with your customers, or to enable easy internal collaboration and group communication.
Twitter is Social Media Marketing
Twitter has become a favorite target for social media marketing. This new form of getting the message out has been used effectively by Barak Obama during his Presidential campaign, and is used by everyone from magazines to movie stars as a quick way to connect with an audience.
With resources and applications like Twitterfeed, it is easy to convert an RSS feed into Twitter updates. This makes it easy to use Twitter as a form of social media marketing.
How it works
Twitter was built and works with a web application framework called Ruby on Rails. Using Mac computers, Twitter’s user interface and web site design were designed using Omnigraffle and Photoshop.
Where it all began
So where did Twitter come from? Jack Dorsey had grown interested in the simple idea of being able to know what his friends were doing. Specifically, Jack wondered if there might be an opportunity to build something compelling around this simple status concept. When he brought the idea up to his colleagues, it was decided that a prototype should be built.
Twitter was funded initially by Obvious, a creative environment in San Francisco, CA. The first prototype was built in two weeks in March 2006 and launched publicly in August of 2006. The service grew popular very quickly and it soon made sense for Twitter to move outside of Obvious. In May 2007, Twitter Incorporated was founded.

Hey I have a question. Can you change the order of the people that show on your profile that you follow like a “change top friends” thing like myspace?

Hey Rachel,
Great question, but unfortunately twitter hasn’t (yet) it’s expanded it’s features to allow you to move around those users you follow. A great suggestion for a feature though, maybe it’s a possible third party application a budding twitter API developer might discover?
